The Mentally Retarded Child
نویسنده
چکیده
, This is a review of various Russian investigations concerning the clinical afl pathopsychological characteristics of the brain-damaged child. The Russians do A0 accept as mentally retarded those unsuccessful children who are generally found 1,1 schools for the educationally subnormal. Most of these are either "pedagogical'5 neglected" or have "partial or peripheral difficulties", e.g. defective hearing or ^ "asthenic" (extremely susceptible to exhaustion). Luria puts forward a thesis that3 genuine mentally retarded child shows pronounced pathological changes in his bra1'' which lead to disruptions of his analysing abilities, disturbances in behaviour an difficulties in his communicating systems. The data presented by Luria and his co\ leagues consist of E.E.G. records, and studies of the orientation reflexes. Th^-contribute a good deal to our understanding of the learning difficulties of the mental retarded child. Luria makes a plea for a careful, detailed diagnosis of the nervous functioning c the mentally subnormal because "the pedagogical task, which includes increasing ^ general tone of these children, in stimulating them to work and making it easy f?f them to do so, will be quite different in each case". He is of the opinion that type of diagnosis will in due course lead to new methods "of compensating for ^ difficulties of the mentally retarded child". The book is only concerned with the diagnostic problems of defectology and 1 must, therefore, not be held against it that workers who are looking for fleN* approaches to remedial work will be disappointed. Some parts are very readable others are only for the expert. The first chapter may upset some readers with >t! one-sided references to the practices "in the Capitalist countries" and argumeI,tS regarding innate capabilities, but these are soon lost in the interesting and enlighten!11-contents of this valuable book. Considering that we are beginning nowadays t0 realise how important language activities are in the education of the mentally si^' normal, this book will be helpful in indicating the nature of the problems which hay? to be tackled.
